Hey, Dr. Rick,

Re: feature #6 of Singapore Math: what did I tell you in an E-mail a few months ago? Elementary school teachers have to stop seeing themselves primarily as language arts teachers a become proficient at everything they teach, including math and science. We have art and music teachers as early as Kindergarten in some schools; why not math and science teachers?

I just had a parent confernce with one of my families that are not happy at all with the Invesigations Math and they made a plan with our Gov. to introduce the SIngapore Math! I was so excited to see that Sylvan, you, are already there! Thanks for the information on it and I plan to keep up each day.

I like Math subject when I was in school, but i am not very good at it. Well, I guess introducing children in Math as early education is good.

As a math teacher and mother of two, Singapore math needs a lot of tweaking. It goes to quickly and in our school, I would hardly say that mastery has occurred before we are off to the next topic. It needs to included smaller steps to master for each concept. It causes a lot of frustration at home because the topics are not clearly introduced and then gradually added on to so a student can feel they have really mastered the topics. The tests don't always cover the material covered in class and homework and many times the questions are strangely worded (translation error?). It needs to be combined with a more structured math program to get full benefit in my opinion.

My friend introduced me to this new product from Singapore. It is a series of interactive games which helped my son to understand difficult math concept. My son now has fun learning math in school, and his results has improved by leaps and bound.

There are certainly a lot of details like that to take into consideration. That is a great point to bring up. I offer the thoughts above as general inspiration but clearly there are questions like the one you bring up where the most important thing will be working in honest good faith. I don?t know if best practices have emerged around things like that, but I am sure that your job is clearly identified as a fair game.
