I am a math teacher. When I read about the curriculum of math classes in other countries where they out perform us, here is what I notice. In those countries the parents and families put a greater emphasis on the importance of learning, and pick up the work at home and really work with those students. For those students, school is their work and they have a huge responsibility to succeed. They do not spend hours & hours on sports and entertainment. Those classes don't spend time going over and reviewing the same concepts for 3-5 years. They jump into the new concepts, which gives them time to have a richer, deeper curriculum. How is it possible that we will ever catch up? We live in an entirely different culture.

Am having problems motivating low-level Algebra II students. These kids have poor reading and counting skills. They see no need for using Algebra II in real life. Have any ideas? Thanks.

Thanks for your interest in this important subject. It can be frustrating -- I know, I've been there -- to motivate students for whom success is rare.

I am studying to be a math teacher. This blog has a lot of good things to say. As a student, math is one of the most difficult subjects to study and learn because it has so much information within it. It is very stressful, but math is used throughout day-to-day life and is therefore needed. Whether it is stressful or not, the subject needs to be taught and with a preferably a positive attitude to help the students in the classroom feel more comfortable.
